Legends And Lore of Lake Ontario -Many Mysteries reside in the unknown dark depth

Susan Peterson Gateley's newest book “Legends and Lore of Lake Ontario†will be available in June in bookstores in the area. It is being distributed by the History Press and tells of many hidden mysteries- sunken ships, unknown beasts, strange forces and sudden disappearances that lie beneath the lake's sunlit surface.
Odd sightings and events have long inspired stories of ghosts, UFO's and other bizarre phenomena. For centuries Lake Ontario has held its secrets, some of which are now revealed in this collection of lake lore. Did a comet really sink the schooner “Charity� Can frogs and fish fall from the skies with a rain? And what has caused the sudden catastrophic crash in population of the lake's most mysterious fish- the amazing American eel?
In “Legends and Lore†Peterson Gateley re-tells famous old tales and shares some new mysteries as well. The book includes accounts of sudden 'tidal waves', historic and modern day sea monster sightings, and a trio of Lake Ontario fish stories about the sturgeon, the salmon and the American eel. Peterson Gateley, herself a sailor, also describes daring (and possibly foolish) feats of salvage on the lake, and the origins and powers associated with names. She details place names such as Soup Harbor, The Devil's Horseblock and Wicked Point on and by the lake, and tells the sad story of the schooner "Caroline Simpson"- a cautionary tale of what can happen when a ship is named after a dead child. She has compiled an interesting mix of previously told tales and never before printed stories of events and objects that in some cases defy explanation.
